Now on Ubuntu and Debian, you don't have to create a 'config' directory in your phpMyAdmin directory, even though that is the message displayed when you access the 'setup' script at http://localhost/phpmyadmin/setup/index.php. Instead, run the scripts

  • /usr/sbin/pma-configure
  • /usr/sbin/pma-secure

which will chmod the /var/lib/phpmyadmin/config.inc.php file which is the "real" config file for the packaged version of phpMyAdmin
