I'm motivated primarily by conscience (belief that the GPL carries with it important implications on a societal level), and so it is important in my life to not only adopt Free Software in my own consumption of technology, but also to help others do the same.

There is also a business-oriented goal that I have, perhaps secondary to the personal goal.  I hope to show the business world (both those providing services and those receiving them) that there is a vibrant and expert pool of resources around this area, so more technology-dependant companies establish operations here, or contract with local providers.  There are already many local companies using Free Software, and looking to do more.  There are already many local technologists who are experts in Free Software.  I hope that this website helps to create a community that brings these resources together.

After years of work, the old freephile site started to suffer from neglect because I was just too busy. I used it as a testbed for free software projects and my own ideas but did not necessarily keep on top of it. Unfortunately, along came a script-kiddie from Saudi Arabia who defaced the website. Due to the security breach, I had to take the site offline.  It may be gone, but it is certainly not forgotten.  I actually still have the whole thing tucked away, safe from malicious doers of evil.  Now, I'll be working to bring back the best of Freephile, combined with an improved infrastructure so that others can join me in the effort.  A collaborative effort is really the only way to keep on top of things.

Who am I?[edit | edit source]

I'm Greg "freephile" Rundlett. freephile means "lover of freedom" like "freedomphile" would be, except that in a moment of bad decision-making, I chose to shorten it; forever confusing the moniker with "free file"; which is not what it stands for at all.

Why this website?[edit | edit source]

Wiki technology is almost as old as the web itself [1]. It's incredibly powerful. Wikipedia is a relevant example. This site serves as a showcase for some of the features and capabilities of the MediaWiki platform that powers Wikipedia.

What do I do with my time?[edit | edit source]

While online, I'm busy keeping up to date on roughly a dozen different high-profile Free Software projects from PHP to OpenOffice to the GIMP. Interests describes some of the technology, hardware and/or software-related things that occupy my time. While offline, I'm busy with my two sons or working on projects around the house and yard. I enjoy organic gardening and photography. As often as possible, I take off into the woods, trails, and mountains to enjoy the swimming, hiking and scenery of New England.

Local[edit | edit source]

As a board member of the Coastal Trails Coalition I work to expand the trail network and also volunteer to do their technology platform. I live in Salisbury, MA
