Whereas FreeMind can export to OpenDocument format, XMind can't export to any office format without a paid license (and even then, it's limited to Microsoft).
FreeMind can export to OpenDocument format, plus an almost exhaustive list of file formats right out of the box; AND has free third-party extensions for more conversions, plus the ability to write your own. XMind can't export to any Office format without a paid license (and even then, it's limited to Microsoft).  Annoyingly, it presents multiple choices in the file->export menu, but without telling you which formats are actually included in the version you're running.  Only '''after''' selecting an export format does the program tell you that you can't do that without your wallet, and prompts you to upgrade.  Nagware.

XMind is a mind-mapping tool. Like FreeMind, but less capable.

I've been running the 2013 version, so maybe the newer version has more features that are relevant. Nope. They've (predictably) focused development on revenue producing strategies rather than making the product more feature-complete, capable, and extensible.

Whereas FreeMind can export to OpenDocument format, XMind can't export to any office format without a paid license (and even then, it's limited to Microsoft).
