For 3rd-party wikis, replicating the advanced functionality found on Wikipedia for authors to create Citations is a challenge. There is a vast reference for all the [[wp:Help:Citation_tools]] but you may just want to resort to much easier solutions like the [[wp:User:Ark25/RefScript|RefScript bookmarklet]]; or using sites like scribbr.com and paste the results into a <code>ref</code> tag.
For the ambitious, you could try to setup the node.js service [[mw:Citoid]] plus the [[mw:Extension:Citoid|Citoid extension]] to enhance the citation functionality of the Visual Editor. You could try adding [[wp:Wikipedia:RefToolbar]] which works with the extension [[mw:Extension:WikiEditor]] for augmenting the ''source'' editing experience. For these, you will likely need to export and import all the lua modules and templates in the cite category, such as [[wp:Template:Cite web]] and [[wp:Module:Citation/CS1]]
