This website (wiki) is run on mediawiki software, the same software that runs the amazing wikipedia.org website. It is not meant to duplicate content there, but rather to extend it with a local flair and purpose. By the same token, it is here to build on the effort of the Greater New Hampshire Linux Users Group and the Boston Linux Users

This website is a project of Greg Rundlett and all the contributors he can single-handedly tie down and force to think globally and act locally ;-) If you want to be part of a global free software movement, then you can do so right here. Register, and add your questions, requests, and information to share.

What is here?[edit | edit source]

Well, for starters, you should check out the special links to the left that tell you what current events are going on, what pages have changed recently, and some of the other Special Pages.

Most of what is here should derive from experience and the various domains of expertise of all our contributors. The overwhelming impetus behind the effort to take this project from idea into practice is the fact that individuals in the United States are at ever greater risk of losing their opportunity for free technology at the same time that free technology is becoming so amazingly abundant and easy to use. The idea is that by building a community, it will create synergies that make a sum greater than the value of all its parts.

To add to the fun and excitement, there is now a 'Bookmark Server' available. The bookmark server allows you to have all your 'favorites' (aka bookmarks) available all the time from any computer. Simply create an account, import your current favorites, and off you go. The interface even allows for the traditional desktop 'drag and drop' operation to be carried out in your web browser, making it very convenient to organize your favorites. Plus, you can share your bookmarks, or keep them private according to your desire.

Major Topics[edit | edit source]

Free Software for Windows This is about how you can enjoy great free software while barely lifting a finger. More details are in the software section

Legal Issues Some of the current business and legal issues that affect your rights as a technology consumer, or developer. Stuff you should be aware of even if IANAL

Books To Read What to read, and where to get it when you just want to curl up with a 600 page manual (Just kidding, all kinds of good book reviews can be found here)

Technology Geeks helping geeks. There are so many problems to solve every day, and usually somebody has already been there and done that. Once in a while when you solve a problem, it's nice to share the elegance of your solution. Or perhaps you've laboriously hacked through a forest of questions on some computer quest; you can share the essence of the matter. Heck, we'll even throw in an opinion once in a while all for free.

See the Software Reviews section for information on various comparisons such as Apache versus IIS or Microsoft Internet Explorer versus Mozilla

HOWTO articles and more can be found in the 'help' section in the left navigation panel.

What is Not Here[edit | edit source]

Wikipedia[edit | edit source]

wp:Wikipedia is the main wiki in the world, and this is just a local instance of the same software.

Lot's more Help and Guidance[edit | edit source]

The Manual of Style and Editing Help pages found on the wikipedia site will tell you everything you need to know about good form and practice on contributing here.

Rundlett.com is where you will find Greg Rundlett's blog and other "non-technical" stuff

More Topics[edit | edit source]

I've decided to expand this wiki into more categories and topics.

I don't have a good list yet of those categories, but I'm diving in with an old SEO article that I wrote and want to preserve.
